Another upcoming film where I’m not sure how I missed hearing about this until now. John Sayles is one of the most respected indie filmmakers around (“Return of the Secaucus Seven,” “Eight Men Out,” “Lone Star,” Matewan”) and now he’s turned his sights on the American occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan. In a fitting twist for the talented director/writer, the film looks to make its commentary on present events by winding the clock back to 1900 and the oft-forgotten American occupation of the Philippines in the Spanish-American War. A fascinating time to pick as a subject, and the film features Chris Cooper and Garret Dillahunt, two actors I’m very fond of. No firm release date yet, but slotted for sometime in 2010.
