What do you get if you cross the alien-horror destruction of ‘Cloverfield’ with a dash of the smart indie-filmmaking of ‘District 9?’ By all appearances, you get British writer-DP-FX creator Gareth Edwards’ directorial debut, ‘Monsters.’ Edwards’ film impressed many earlier in the year at the Edinburgh Film Festival, where it won the New Directors Award. Don’t be fooled by this trailer, which is pretty clearly trying to pigeonhole this film into the horror genre; reviews I’ve read claim that there’s actually an entertaining, unique splash of screwball rom-com wit thrown.
Magnolia Pictures has this set for a very appropriate October 29th (Halloween weekend) release. Yes, there might actually be a good movie to give you the thrills on All Hallow’s Eve this year.
