Boy, has it been a slow news week. But it was finally Marvel’s turn to bust out the big guns at Comic-Con today, putting out footage of Thor and Captain America (can’t find anything posted online yet). The biggest announcement was really a confirmation of rumors that have been swirling for a couple weeks now: Marvel’s 2012 superhero-crossover-blockbuster flick The Avengers will feature geek idol Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog) as director, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/The Incredible Hulk (taking over from Ed Norton, booted from the project a while back), and Jeremy Renner (recent Oscar nominee for The Hurt Locker) as Hawkeye. They will join up with Samuel l. Jackson (Nick Fury), Scarlett Johannson (Black Widow), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris Evans (Captain America), Don Cheadle (War Machine) and Clark Gregg (Agent Coulson) to create the most star-studded action romp since The Towering Inferno.
Still no solid confirmation on whether Ant-Man will have a part in The Avengers – he IS definitely getting his own film directed by Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World) scheduled for 2012, but I would suspect that the kind of ridiculous Ant-Man will have a small-to-cameo role in The Avengers.
Those of you who don’t at all care about superhero movies should feel free to start reading my blog again starting with the next post.
You should have seen my reaction when I heard that Joss Whedon is directing it. There was squealing and general hilarity.
Also high on my things to do list is to watch the panel from Comic Con that had both Joss and J.J. Abrams sitting on it. Gah. Talk about geek heaven.
